SAGE GREEN BUTTERFLY CROCHET MOTIF
An approximate, photo-inspired pattern — US crochet terms.
MATERIALS
• Sage green and ivory yarn of the same weight
• A hook suitable for your yarn
• Yarn needle and scissors
ABBREVIATIONS
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet
BUTTERFLY WINGS
With sage green, make a magic ring.
Work these four wing groups into the ring:
Upper wing: ch 3, 3 dc, 3 tr, 3 dc, ch 3, sl st into the ring.
Lower wing: ch 2, 2 hdc, 3 dc, 2 hdc, ch 2, sl st into the ring.
Repeat the lower wing, then repeat the upper wing.
Tighten the ring gently, leaving enough room for the wings to lie flat. Fasten off.
IVORY WING EDGING
Join ivory at the outside edge of a wing.
Work sc evenly around each wing, placing 2 sc into a stitch where extra width is needed at the rounded tips.
Slip stitch into the valleys between wings to keep the four sections distinct.
For a wider border, add a second round of sc.
Adjust the increases on your sample: the edging should lie flat without curling or ruffling.
BODY
With sage green, ch 11.
Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 10 sc.
Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.
Sew the body vertically across the center of the wings. For a thicker body, make a second identical strip and sew the two together before attaching.
ANTENNAE
Attach sage yarn at the top of the body.
Ch 6, then sl st back along the chain.
Repeat for the second antenna. Secure and weave in all ends.
BLANKET ASSEMBLY
Make and block several matching butterflies first.
Arrange them in rows on a flat surface.
Using ivory yarn, connect neighboring wing edges with chain bridges, attaching each bridge with a slip stitch. Begin by testing bridges of ch 5–9; adjust their length to match the spacing of your blocked motifs.
This joining layout is freeform rather than a counted lace chart. Keep the spacing consistent, avoid pulling the wings out of shape, and check the blanket flat after every row.
Finish with an ivory sc border around the outside, adjusting chains and stitch placement to keep the edge flat. Weave in all ends and block according to the yarn’s care instructions.
SIZING
Measure one blocked motif together with its joining space.
Divide your desired blanket width and length by those measurements to estimate the number of columns and rows.
The result will be an interpretation of the reference, not an exact reproduction of its raised butterfly texture or floral lace joins.
