Crochet Christmas Spiral with Snowflakes and Holly — US Terms

An original pattern inspired by the photo. The exact stitch counts cannot be recovered from the image; this version has not been test-crocheted.

Materials

  • Red, white and green cotton yarn, sport weight.
  • 2.5–3 mm crochet hook, or a size that produces firm stitches.
  • Yarn needle and scissors.
  • Fabric stiffener, blocking mat and pins.
  • Clear hanging thread.
  • Optional gold beads and lightweight ornament wire for shaping.

Abbreviations

ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; st = stitch.

Picot = ch 3, sl st into the first of those 3 chains.

1. Red spiral

With red yarn, ch 182.

Row 1: Work 3 dc into the third chain from the hook, then 3 dc into every remaining chain. You will have 540 dc, excluding the turning chains.

The increases make the strip curl naturally. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

For a longer decoration, increase the starting chain. Its finished length depends on your yarn, tension and how widely you open the curls.

2. White decorative edge

Join white yarn to the first dc.

Work 1 sc into every dc along the strip. Turn.

Ch 1, then repeat: sc in the next st, picot, sc in the next 2 sts. Repeat to the end, working sc into any remaining stitches.

Fasten off. Arrange the strip into an evenly spaced spiral. For the broad, open turns shown in the photo, secure thin ornament wire along the back of the red strip, enclosing both wire ends completely.

3. White snowflakes — make 7–9

With white yarn, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Work 6 sc into the ring. Tighten gently and join with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 2: Repeat the following arm in each of the 6 sc:

  • Ch 7.
  • Make a picot at the tip.
  • Sl st into the next 2 chains, working back toward the centre.
  • Ch 4; sl st into the second chain from the hook and the next 2 chains. Sl st back into the same stem chain where this branch began.
  • Repeat that branch once more.
  • Sl st into the remaining 5 stem chains.
  • Sl st into the next sc of the centre ring.

Fasten off. Spread the six arms and their small branches evenly. Apply fabric stiffener according to its instructions, pin flat and allow to dry completely.

4. Red stars — make 4–6

With red yarn, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Work 10 sc into the ring. Join with a sl st.

Round 2: Repeat five times:

Ch 5. Sl st into the second chain from the hook, sc into the next chain, hdc into the next and dc into the last chain. Skip the next sc of the centre ring and sl st into the following sc.

Fasten off, weave in the ends and block the five points flat. Stiffen if needed.

5. Green holly leaves — make 16–24

With green yarn, ch 9.

Work along the chain: sc into the second chain from the hook, hdc into the next, dc into each of the next 4 chains, hdc into the next, then 3 sc into the last chain.

Continue along the opposite side: hdc into the next chain, dc into each of the next 4 chains, hdc into the next and sc into the last. Join with a sl st.

For pointed edges, work around the leaf with a sc in each stitch and a picot after every third sc. Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.

6. Red berries

Make three berries for each holly cluster.

With red yarn:

Round 1: 6 sc into a magic ring.
Round 2: 1 sc into each stitch — 6 sc.

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Thread it through the six stitches and draw closed. Sew three berries between two or three green leaves.

7. Assembly

Hang the spiral temporarily while arranging the decorations.

Attach the snowflakes to alternating turns using white or clear thread. Place red stars between them, and sew holly clusters directly onto the red strip. Vary the hanging lengths so the ornaments remain separate.

Add optional gold beads above the hanging motifs. Finish with a red star at the bottom and a strong hanging loop at the top.

Adjust the spacing until the spiral hangs evenly and every snowflake is clearly visible.
