Mini Granny Christmas Trees

Make the colorful flat Christmas trees pictured on the silver tray.

This original pattern is inspired by the image. It uses a simple granny triangle with a small trunk; the stitch arrangement may differ from the pictured trees.

Materials

  • DK cotton yarn in burgundy, dusty pink, navy, lavender, plum, pale blue, ivory, or teal
  • Beige or gray yarn for the trunks
  • 3–3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle and scissors

Finished size: Approximately 9–12 cm tall, depending on yarn and tension.

US crochet terms

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • sp: space
  • MR: magic ring

A granny group means 3 dc worked into the same space. The beginning ch 3 counts as one dc.

1. Make the tree center

Using your chosen tree color, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, work 2 dc into the ring, ch 2. Work (3 dc, ch 2) twice into the ring. Tighten the ring and join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3.

You have 3 granny groups and 3 corner spaces.

2. Enlarge the triangle

Round 2: Sl st across the next 2 dc and into the first ch-2 corner space.

Ch 3, then work (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into that same space. Ch 1.

In the next corner, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Ch 1.

In the last corner, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Ch 1.

Join to the top of the beginning ch 3.

You have 6 granny groups, 3 corner spaces, and 3 side spaces.

Round 3: Sl st across the next 2 dc and into the first corner space.

Ch 3, then work (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into the same corner. Ch 1.

Work 3 dc into the next ch-1 side space, then ch 1.

In the next corner, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Ch 1. Work 3 dc into the next side space, then ch 1.

In the last corner, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc). Ch 1. Work 3 dc into the final side space, then ch 1.

Join to the top of the beginning ch 3.

You have 9 granny groups, 3 corner spaces, and 6 side spaces.

3. Finish the tree outline

Choose one corner as the treetop. Sl st to that corner.

Work (sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, sl st in the second chain from the hook, hdc, sc) into the treetop corner space. This creates a small pointed tip.

Continue around the triangle:

  • Work 1 sc into each dc.
  • Work 1 sc into each ch-1 space.
  • Work 3 sc into each of the two lower corner spaces.

Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the end.

4. Add the trunk

Turn the tree so the pointed tip faces upward.

Find the middle granny group along the bottom edge. Locate the five edging stitches across that group: one above the space before it, three above the dc stitches, and one above the space after it.

With the right side facing, join beige or gray yarn to the first of those five stitches.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in the same stitch and the next 4 stitches. Turn. 5 sc

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across. Turn. 5 sc

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across. 5 sc

Fasten off and weave in the ends on the back.

For a longer trunk, add one more row.

5. Shape and finish

Lightly dampen the tree and lay it flat on a blocking mat. Gently shape the top point, spread the lower corners evenly, and straighten the trunk. Let it dry completely.

For a hanging ornament, thread a length of yarn through the treetop and knot it into a loop.
