Crochet Heart & Flower Table Runner

This is a simplified, untested pattern inspired by the photo, rather than an exact reproduction. The hearts below are smaller and more solid than the pictured lace hearts.

Materials

  • Cotton yarn in cream, terracotta, sage green, blush pink, and taupe
  • A crochet hook suitable for your yarn, approximately 3–4 mm
  • Yarn needle, scissors, and blocking pins

US terms: ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet.

1. Heart motifs — make 8

Make two hearts in each color: terracotta, sage, blush, and taupe.

Round 1: In a magic ring, work: ch 3, 3 tr, 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr, ch 3, sl st into the ring. Pull the ring closed.

Round 2: Ch 1. Work:

  • 3 sc into the first ch-3 space.
  • 2 sc into each of the next 3 tr.
  • 1 sc into each of the next 3 dc.
  • 1 sc into the ch-1 space.
  • (Sc, ch 2, sc) into the bottom tr.
  • 1 sc into the next ch-1 space.
  • 1 sc into each of the next 3 dc.
  • 2 sc into each of the next 3 tr.
  • 3 sc into the final ch-3 space.
  • Sl st into the central dip.

Fasten off.

Round 3: Join cream at the central dip. Sc around, adding an extra sc in three evenly spaced stitches around each rounded lobe. Work (sc, ch 2, sc) into the bottom ch-2 space. Join and fasten off. Keep the edging flat.

2. Cream mesh base

Arrange the eight hearts vertically, all pointing in the same direction. Leave room beside them for flowers and leaves.

Make a foundation chain in a multiple of 4, plus 2, wide enough for a heart and decorations on both sides.

Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook. Ch 3, skip 3 chains, sc in the next chain. Repeat across.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in the first sc. Ch 3, sc in the next sc. Repeat across.

Repeat Row 2 until the base accommodates all eight hearts with small gaps between them.

3. Small flowers — make 18

Center: With cream, work 6 sc into a magic ring. Join with a sl st and fasten off.

Petals: Join terracotta to any sc. In that stitch, work (sl st, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st). Repeat in each remaining stitch for 6 petals. Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.

4. Leaves — make 18

With sage yarn, ch 10.

Starting in the second chain from the hook, work:

Sc, hdc, dc in each of the next 5 chains, hdc, 3 sc in the last chain.

Continue along the other side of the foundation chain:

Hdc, dc in each of the next 5 chains, hdc, sc.

Join with a sl st. Fasten off, leaving a tail. Embroider a central vein with a few straight stitches if desired.

5. Scalloped border

Work one round of sc around the mesh base, placing 3 sc into each ch-3 space along the short edges. Along the long edges, space stitches evenly so the fabric lies flat. Work 3 sc at each corner.

For the scallops, repeat:

Skip 1 stitch, 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 1 stitch, sl st in the next stitch.

Adjust spacing near corners as needed.

6. Assemble and finish

Sew the hearts down the center in this order:

Terracotta → sage → blush → taupe, then repeat.

Arrange nine flowers and nine leaves down each side. Sew each piece securely, attaching through the mesh stitches rather than across open holes.

Weave in all ends, gently wet-block the runner into a rectangle, and let it dry flat. For a longer runner, repeat the four-heart color sequence and extend the mesh base.
