Emerald Gold Crochet Spiral Christmas Tree

An untested pattern inspired by the image. The exact construction cannot be determined from the photo; this version uses a shaped wire support to hold the spiral upright.

Materials

  • Emerald-green cotton yarn and gold yarn of a similar thickness
  • 3–3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Flexible craft wire, pliers, and floral tape
  • Wooden base with a firmly attached central dowel
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Clear thread for hanging stars

US terms: ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch.

1. Prepare the spiral support

Shape the wire into a continuous spiral around the dowel, with approximately six turns. Make the bottom turn wide and gradually narrow each turn toward the top.

Allow space between the turns. Secure the bottom to the base and the top to the dowel. Fold all wire ends inward and cover them with floral tape.

Measure the wire spiral from bottom to top with a flexible tape measure. This measurement determines the length of your crochet ribbon.

2. Crochet the green ribbon

With emerald yarn, make a foundation chain approximately equal to the measured spiral length. Keep the chain relaxed.

Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and every chain across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in every stitch. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Divide the stitch count into three approximately equal sections. Work sc across the first third, hdc across the middle third, and dc across the final third. Ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Work dc over the dc section, hdc over the hdc section, and sc over the sc section.

Fasten off. The narrower end becomes the top of the tree; the wider end becomes the bottom.

For a broader ribbon, repeat Rows 3–4, keeping each stitch type above the same section.

3. Add the gold edging

Join gold yarn to a corner.

Sc evenly around the ribbon, working 3 sc at each corner. Along row ends, distribute stitches so the edging lies flat without puckering. Join with a sl st and fasten off.

For a decorative outer edge, work a second pass along the curved outer side:

Sc in the next 3 stitches, ch 3, sl st into the first chain.

Repeat to create small gold picots. Finish with sc in any remaining stitches.

4. Attach and shape

Starting at the base, sew one long edge of the ribbon securely around the wire using matching yarn. Keep the ribbon’s wider end at the bottom.

Follow the support upward, arranging each turn into an even slope. Secure the narrow end near the top of the dowel.

Add discreet thread ties to the dowel wherever the spiral needs extra support. The ribbon should hold its shape without being pulled tightly.

5. Crochet the large star

With emerald yarn:

Round 1: Work 10 sc into a magic ring. Join with a sl st.

Round 2: Ch 5. Working back down the chain, sl st in the second chain from the hook, sc in the next chain, hdc in the next, and dc in the last chain. Skip the next stitch of Round 1 and sl st into the following stitch.

Repeat five times to make five points. Fasten off.

Make a second identical star. Place the two stars together.

With gold yarn, sc through both layers around the outline, adding (sc, ch 1, sc) at each point. Leave a small opening at the bottom for the dowel. Lightly stuff if desired, then sew the opening snugly around the dowel.

6. Make three small gold stars

Work the same star pattern using finer gold yarn and a smaller hook. Use one layer for each small star.

Attach each to a short length of clear thread and hang at different heights inside the spiral.

7. Finish

Weave in all yarn ends. Adjust the turns so the tree widens evenly toward the base. Check that the base is stable and every wire end is covered.

Display away from candles and open flames.
