Materials: Worsted cotton or acrylic yarn in cream, red, sage/olive green, and a little brown; 3.5–4 mm crochet hook; fiberfill for the heart; wooden beads; small gold bells; gold beads for the flower center; tapestry needle; scissors; red ribbon.
Abbreviations: MR = magic ring, ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, tr = treble crochet, inc = 2 sts in same stitch.
- Large Star – make 2 panels. Start with cream yarn. MR, ch 3, work 14 dc into the ring, join. Increase evenly on the next round. To form each of the 5 points, work gradually taller stitches such as sc, hdc, dc, tr, then reverse with tr, dc, hdc, sc. Repeat around until you have five even points. Make a second identical star. Place both pieces together and crochet around them with red sc, working 2–3 sts at each star tip to keep the points sharp.
- Poinsettia Flower. With red yarn, MR and work 10 sc. For each of 5 petals: sl st, ch 2, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, ch 2, sl st, shaping each petal into a pointed oval. Make a second, slightly smaller flower layer if you want the raised 3D effect. Sew both layers to the center of the star and add 7–9 small gold beads in the middle.
- Green Leaves. Make 5 leaves in sage green. Ch 8, work sc, hdc, dc, 2 tr, dc, hdc along one side, work 3 sc in the last chain, then repeat the same stitches along the opposite side. Fasten off and sew the leaves behind the red flower.
- Small Christmas Trees – make 2. Begin from the top in green. Ch 2, 2 sc in the second chain. Increase at both ends of each row to form a small triangle. Make 3 layered triangular sections, each slightly wider than the one above. Add a tiny brown trunk at the bottom.
- Crochet Heart. Make 2 red heart panels. MR, then work approximately 3 tr, 3 dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr, join. Continue one or two shaping rounds until the heart reaches the desired size. Sew the two panels together, lightly stuffing before closing.
- Assembly. Attach 5 cream hanging cords to the bottom of the star. On the outer two cords, add wooden beads and gold bells. Hang one green Christmas tree from the second cord and another from the fourth. Place the stuffed red heart on the center cord with wooden beads above and below it, finishing with a gold bell. Add bells under both trees.
- Finishing. Attach a hanging loop to the top point of the star and finish it with a large red satin bow. Block the star and decorations gently so everything hangs straight and symmetrical.
Finished look: a cream five-point crochet star with red edging, a raised red poinsettia with green leaves and gold-bead center, plus hanging hearts, Christmas trees, wooden beads, and gold bells.
