Part 1: Crochet Spiral Motif

Each spiral motif is made using four colors worked continuously in the round.

Step 1 – Start the spiral

  • With pink yarn, make a magic ring.
  • Ch 1, work 1 sc, 1 hdc, and 2 dc into the ring. Pull up a long loop.
  • Join purple yarn into the ring. Work 1 sc, 1 hdc, and 2 dc. Pull up a long loop.
  • Repeat with ivory yarn, then olive green.
  • Tighten the magic ring. You now have four separate spiral arms.

Step 2 – Build the spiral

Work each color in turn, always continuing into the stitches of the neighboring arm.

  • Round 2: Work 2 dc in each of the next 4 stitches of the neighboring arm. Repeat for all four colors.
  • Round 3: For each color, repeat (1 dc, 2 dc in next st) four times.
  • Round 4: For each color, repeat (2 dc, 2 dc in next st) four times.
  • Round 5: For each color, repeat (3 dc, 2 dc in next st) four times.
  • Round 6: For each color, repeat (4 dc, 2 dc in next st) four times.

Continue in the same sequence, adding one dc between increases each round. Keep the four arms in order, working into the available stitches of the preceding arm. Place markers to track the beginning of each arm.

For the final round, taper each color with 2 hdc, 2 sc, and 1 sl st, then fasten off.

Part 2: Decorative Lace Border

Work around each completed spiral motif.

Round 1 – Ivory: Join yarn, ch 3, dc evenly around the edge. Join with sl st.

Round 2 – Olive green: Ch 4, skip 1 st, dc in next st. Repeat around to create an open mesh.

Round 3 – Pink: Work (sc, ch 3, skip 2 stitches) around.

Round 4 – Purple: Work 3 dc into each ch-3 space.

Round 5 – Ivory: Work (sc, ch 5, skip 3 stitches) around for an airy lace effect.

Round 6 – Pink: Work 5 sc into each ch-5 space, adjusting evenly to prevent ruffling.

Each finished motif should measure approximately 25–30 cm (10–12 inches), depending on yarn and tension.

Part 3: Assemble the Blanket

Make approximately 48–63 motifs, depending on your desired blanket size and the actual diameter of your finished motifs.

  • Arrange motifs into rows, matching the spiral direction.
  • Use ivory yarn and a yarn needle to sew adjacent motif edges together at several evenly spaced points.
  • Fill larger spaces between circular motifs with small crochet mesh connectors.
  • Continue joining until the blanket reaches the desired dimensions.

For the mesh connectors, create short chains of 5–7 stitches between neighboring motif edges and anchor them with sc. Repeat until the gaps are filled securely.

Part 4: Pom-Pom Border

Round 1: With purple yarn, work sc evenly around the entire blanket.

Round 2: Ch 3, skip 2 stitches, sc in next stitch. Repeat around.

Round 3: Make small bobbles along the edge using the following technique:

  • Ch 3.
  • Work 4 unfinished dc into the third chain from the hook.
  • Yarn over and pull through all loops.
  • Ch 1 to secure the bobble.
  • Sl st into the next available border space.

Repeat around the entire blanket, spacing the bobbles evenly.

Part 5: Matching Spiral Pillow

Create one large spiral motif using the same technique.

  • Continue the spiral until it measures approximately 40 × 40 cm when gently blocked and squared with a border.
  • Crochet a matching square back panel using dc rows.
  • Place both pieces together, wrong sides facing.
  • Join three sides with sc.
  • Insert a cushion pad.
  • Close the remaining side.

Finish with purple pom-poms around the pillow edges.

Finishing

Weave in all yarn ends securely. Gently wet-block the motifs to improve their shape, following the yarn manufacturer’s care instructions. Allow the blanket to dry completely before use.
