Christmas Popcorn Balls

These festive popcorn balls combine crunchy popcorn, soft marshmallow coating, red and green chocolates, and colorful sprinkles. They make a cheerful treat for Christmas movie nights, holiday parties, or homemade gift boxes.

Makes: 10–12 popcorn balls
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Setting time: About 30 minutes

Ingredients

10 cups plain popped popcorn, with all unpopped kernels removed
280 g mini marshmallows
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing your hands
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon salt, optional
¾ cup red and green candy-coated chocolates
2 tablespoons Christmas sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare the popcorn

Pop your popcorn using an air popper or your preferred stovetop method. If using microwave popcorn, choose plain or lightly salted popcorn without a heavy butter coating.

Let it cool slightly, then carefully remove any unpopped kernels. Measure 10 cups of popped popcorn into a very large mixing bowl, leaving enough room to stir.

  1. Prepare your work surface

Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Measure out the chocolates and sprinkles before melting the marshmallows, as the mixture becomes firmer as it cools.

Lightly grease a silicone spatula with butter to make mixing easier.

  1. Melt the butter and marshmallows

Place the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Once melted, add the mini marshmallows.

Stir gently and continuously until the marshmallows melt into a smooth mixture. Keep the heat low and remove the pan promptly once everything has melted. Overheating can make the finished popcorn balls hard.

  1. Add the vanilla

Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and optional salt until evenly combined. Skip the extra salt if your popcorn is already salted.

  1. Coat the popcorn

Immediately pour the warm marshmallow mixture over the popcorn.

Use the greased spatula to gently fold the popcorn from the bottom of the bowl upward. Continue until the pieces are evenly coated, taking care not to crush them.

  1. Add the Christmas candies

Allow the mixture to cool briefly until comfortably warm but still soft and sticky. Fold in most of the red and green chocolates and sprinkles, reserving a few for decorating.

Avoid adding the chocolates while the mixture is very hot, as they may melt or leave streaks of color.

  1. Shape the popcorn balls

Lightly butter your clean hands. Scoop out approximately ¾–1 cup of the mixture for each ball.

Gently press it together between your palms, turning it as you shape it. Apply just enough pressure to hold the popcorn together without compressing it into a hard, dense ball.

If the mixture sticks to your hands, add a little more butter. Make 10–12 balls, depending on your preferred size.

  1. Decorate

While the balls are still slightly sticky, gently press the reserved chocolates and sprinkles onto the outside.

Place each ball on the parchment-lined tray, leaving a little space between them.

  1. Let them set

Allow the popcorn balls to rest at room temperature for about 30 minutes, or until they hold their shape and are no longer very sticky.

Arrange them on a serving platter or wrap individually once completely cool.

Tips for the Best Results

Use freshly popped popcorn for the best texture.

Keep the marshmallow mixture over low heat. Cooking it longer will not help it bind better and can make the coating tough.

Add the candy only when the coated popcorn is comfortably warm.

Shape the balls while the mixture is still pliable. If it cools completely in the bowl, it becomes harder to portion.

For smaller party treats, use about ½ cup of mixture per ball and increase the number of servings.

Optional Variations

White Chocolate Drizzle: Drizzle the set popcorn balls with melted white chocolate, then let the chocolate firm up before wrapping.

Chocolate Chip Version: Replace the candy-coated chocolates with mini chocolate chips, folding them in only once the mixture has cooled enough to prevent melting.

Extra Festive Finish: Use Christmas tree, star, or snowflake sprinkles alongside the red and green candies.

Storage

Store the completely cooled popcorn balls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Separate layers with parchment paper.

They taste best on the day they are made, when the popcorn is at its crunchiest. Keep them away from heat and humidity, and avoid refrigerating them, as moisture can soften the popcorn.

For gifting, wrap each ball in a food-safe treat bag and tie with a festive ribbon.
