Crispy Baked Mozzarella Cheese Sticks

Ingredients
12 mozzarella string cheese sticks
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1½ cups breadcrumbs (panko works best)
½ cup grated parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
Cooking spray or 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare three bowls:
    • Bowl 1: add flour.
    • Bowl 2: whisk eggs with milk.
    • Bowl 3: mix breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, garlic powder, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  3. Roll each mozzarella stick in flour first, coating it completely.
  4. Dip it into the egg mixture.
  5. Roll it in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly so the coating sticks well.
  6. For extra crispiness, dip again in egg and coat again in breadcrumbs.
  7. Place the coated cheese sticks on the prepared baking tray.
  8. Lightly spray or brush them with olive oil.
  9. Bake for 8–10 minutes until golden and crispy. Watch carefully so the cheese does not melt out.
  10. Let them cool for 2 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestion
Serve hot with marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or spicy ketchup.

Tips
Freeze the coated cheese sticks for 20–30 minutes before baking to help keep the cheese inside.
You can also fry them in hot oil for about 1–2 minutes until golden.

History
Cheese sticks are believed to have developed from traditional fried cheese dishes in Europe, where cheese was often breaded and fried as a snack. In the United States, mozzarella sticks became especially popular in the 1970s and 1980s when restaurants and diners started serving them as appetizers. Their crispy coating and melted cheese center quickly made them a favorite comfort food. Over time, baked and air-fried versions became common as people looked for lighter ways to enjoy this snack.

Benefits
Mozzarella cheese sticks can provide several nutritional benefits when eaten in moderation. Mozzarella cheese is a good source of calcium, which helps support strong bones and teeth. It also contains protein that helps build and repair muscles. Cheese provides vitamin B12, important for the nervous system and red blood cell production. When baked instead of fried, cheese sticks contain less fat and fewer calories, making them a lighter option.
