Step 1: Crochet Santa’s Face
Using peach yarn:
Round 1: Make a magic ring and work 12 DC into the ring. Join.
Round 2: Work 2 DC in each stitch around. (24)
Round 3: Repeat (1 DC, 2 DC in next stitch) around. (36)
Round 4: Repeat (2 DC, 2 DC in next stitch) around. (48)
Round 5: Repeat (3 DC, 2 DC in next stitch) around. (60)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Attach two black eyes symmetrically to the upper half of the face.
Step 2: Make Santa’s 3D Beard
Using ivory yarn:
Round 1: Attach yarn along the lower half of Santa’s face.
Round 2: Work groups of 5 DC into selected stitches, securing each group with a SC to create raised scallops.
Round 3: Repeat the scallop pattern along the previous row to build volume.
Round 4: Add another overlapping layer of scallops, making the beard wider at the cheeks and narrower at the bottom.
Round 5: Work small popcorn stitches across the bottom to create a fluffy, dimensional beard.
Make two curved ivory crochet pieces for the mustache and sew them beneath the nose.
Step 3: Crochet Santa’s Hat
Using red yarn:
Row 1: CH 31, SC in the second chain from the hook and across.
Rows 2–4: CH 1, turn, SC across.
Rows 5–18: Decrease one stitch at the beginning or end of each row to gradually taper the hat.
Fasten off.
Using ivory yarn, crochet a thick band of popcorn stitches along the hat’s lower edge.
Make a fluffy white pom-pom and attach it to the tip. Fold the hat sideways and sew it above Santa’s face.
Step 4: Make the 3D Nose and Cheeks
Nose:
Using peach yarn:
- R1: 6 SC in MR.
- R2: INC around. (12)
- R3: SC around. (12)
- R4: DEC around. (6)
Lightly stuff, close, and sew to the center of the face.
Cheeks:
Using pink yarn, crochet two small circles with 8–10 HDC in a magic ring.
Sew one on each side of the nose.
Step 5: Crochet the Red Granny Square
Using red yarn:
Round 1: CH 4 and join to form a ring. Work 3 DC, CH 2, four times, joining to create four corners.
Round 2: Work 3 DC clusters into each corner space, separated by CH 2.
Rounds 3–6: Continue expanding the granny square with 3 DC clusters along each side and (3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC) in each corner.
Rounds 7–8: Add raised popcorn stitches or bobble clusters between the granny groups to create the textured red background.
Keep the square flat and adjust the number of rounds to fit Santa’s face.
Step 6: Crochet the Holly Leaves
Using dark green yarn:
CH 10.
Working around the foundation chain, alternate SC, HDC, DC, and TR stitches to create a pointed leaf.
Work back along the opposite side, adding small picots for jagged holly edges.
Make 3–4 leaves.
For the berries, crochet tiny red balls using 6 SC in a magic ring, followed by one increase round and one decrease round.
Sew the leaves and berries onto Santa’s hat and the square corners.
Step 7: Add the Cream Border
Using ivory yarn:
Round 1: Work SC evenly around the square, with 3 SC in each corner.
Round 2: Work DC groups around all four sides, adding (2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC) at each corner.
Round 3: Work a final round of SC or HDC for a neat, sturdy edge.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Step 8: Final Assembly
- Position Santa’s face in the center of the red granny square.
- Sew the face securely onto the background.
- Attach the layered beard and curled mustache.
- Position the red hat and fluffy pom-pom.
- Add the holly leaves and berries.
- Gently steam-block the square without flattening the 3D details.
Finished Result: A festive, dimensional Santa Claus granny square with a textured red background, creamy white border, fluffy beard, and charming Christmas details.
