Big Honey Garlic Chicken

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 1.5–2 kg chicken (thighs, drumsticks, or breast)
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Honey Garlic Sauce

  • ½ cup pure honey
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 6–8 cloves garlic (finely minced)
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger (optional but great)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup or chili sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons water

Garnish (optional)

  • Sesame seeds
  • Chopped spring onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken
  • Wash and pat the chicken dry.
  • Season with salt and black pepper.
  1. Cook the chicken
  • Heat oil in a large pan or pot on medium heat.
  • Add chicken and cook until golden brown on both sides.
  • Remove chicken and set aside.
  1. Make the honey garlic sauce
  • In the same pan, lower the heat.
  • Add garlic and ginger, sauté for 30–40 seconds until fragrant.
  • Add honey, soy sauce, ketchup, vinegar, and chili flakes.
  • Stir well and let it simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  1. Thicken the sauce
  • Mix cornstarch with water.
  • Pour into the sauce while stirring.
  • Sauce will become glossy and thick.
  1. Combine
  • Return chicken to the pan.
  • Coat well with sauce.
  • Cover and cook on low heat for 15–20 minutes, turning occasionally.
  1. Finish
  • Taste and adjust salt or sweetness.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and spring onions.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve with steamed rice
  • Goes great with noodles or stir-fried vegetables
  • Can also be baked at 180°C (350°F) for 25–30 minutes
