Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Onion Gravy

Introduction
Salisbury steak is a classic comfort food made with seasoned ground beef patties served with a rich mushroom and onion gravy. It is hearty, flavorful, and often served with mashed potatoes for a satisfying meal. The dish became popular in American home cooking and remains a favorite family dinner.

Ingredients

For the steaks
500 g ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

For the mushroom onion gravy
2 tablespoons butter or oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cups sliced mushrooms
2 tablespoons all purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until everything is well combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties to form the Salisbury steaks.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side until nicely browned. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet melt the butter or heat the oil. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3 minutes until softened.
  5. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for another 4 to 5 minutes until they release their moisture and become tender.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms and stir well. Cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  7. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder.
  8. Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer and cook until it thickens. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  9. Return the browned patties to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, cover, and simmer for about 10 minutes until the steaks are fully cooked and tender.
  10. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables and enjoy the rich mushroom onion gravy.
