Materials
- Worsted-weight cotton yarn
- Cream/off-white yarn
- Purple yarn
- Crochet hook suitable for the yarn, approximately 3.5–4 mm
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Small amount of fiberfill
- Thin strong yarn or cord for the center
- Small wooden beads, optional
Spiral Base
The spiral is worked as a long, slightly curved crochet strip and then shaped around a central cord.
Round 1 — Cream
Chain 90–110 stitches, depending on the desired length.
Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 single crochet in each chain across.
Chain 1 and turn.
Round 2 — Purple
Work 1 single crochet in each stitch across.
Chain 1 and turn.
Round 3 — Cream
Work 1 single crochet in every stitch across.
Chain 1 and turn.
Round 4 — Purple
Work 1 single crochet in every stitch across.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
For a thicker spiral, add another cream and purple round.
Creating the Spiral
Place the finished strip around a thin central cord.
Starting from the bottom, gently curve the strip into repeated S-shaped loops around the cord. Keep the loops evenly spaced.
Use small hidden stitches to secure the spiral to the central cord at several points.
Do not pull the stitches too tightly—the spiral should remain soft and dimensional.
Center Flower / Motif
With purple yarn:
- Make a magic ring.
- Work 8 single crochet into the ring.
- Join with a slip stitch.
- For the next round, work small groups of stitches around the ring to create a compact circular center.
- Change to cream yarn.
- Work another round around the purple center.
- Continue with purple around the outside.
- Fasten off and neatly hide the yarn tails.
Attach the flower motif to the center section of the spiral.
Top Hanging Detail
At the top of the central cord, create a small crocheted flower or loop.
Add a wooden bead beneath the flower if desired.
Make a hanging loop with approximately 10–15 chain stitches and secure it firmly.
Finishing
- Arrange the spiral so each loop has a similar width.
- Straighten the central cord.
- Secure the top and bottom.
- Hide all yarn ends with a tapestry needle.
- Lightly block the crochet if necessary.
- Check that the ornament hangs vertically without twisting excessively.
Color combination: cream + lavender/purple gives the same overall style as the edited image, but you can substitute red, green, gold, or any Christmas colors.
