Christmas Spiral Tree with Star

This pattern recreates the spiral Christmas tree shown in the photo: a long white crocheted spiral with a burgundy-red edging, hanging red stars, and a large star topper.

Materials

  • White worsted-weight yarn
  • Burgundy/red worsted-weight yarn
  • Crochet hook suitable for your yarn, approximately 3.5–4 mm
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Fiberfill, small amount
  • Thin strong thread or yarn for hanging the ornaments
  • Optional: small wire or clear stiff cord for the center support

Main Spiral Tree

Use white yarn.

Foundation:
Chain 8.

Row 1:
Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 single crochet in each stitch across. Turn.

Row 2:
Chain 1, work 2 single crochet in each stitch across. Turn.

Continue increasing gradually by adding stitches evenly across each row. The piece should become wider as you work downward.

To create the long spiral shape, continue working rows while increasing at regular intervals. After several rows, begin shaping the outer edge with slightly larger increases toward the lower section.

Keep the center narrower and the bottom progressively wider.

Edging

Join burgundy yarn to the outside edge.

Work 1 single crochet around the entire outer edge.

For a decorative raised border, work:

1 single crochet, 1 slip stitch, 1 single crochet

Repeat around the edge.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Forming the Spiral

Lay the finished white piece flat.

Starting from the narrow top, gently twist the piece around an imaginary vertical center line, creating several progressively wider spirals toward the bottom.

Secure the spiral at several points using small hidden stitches.

Keep the spacing between each turn even so the tree hangs naturally.

Center Hanging Cord

Attach a strong white thread or matching yarn from the top of the spiral to the bottom.

This central support keeps the spiral in its Christmas-tree shape.

Large Star Topper

Use white yarn.

Magic ring.

Round 1:
Work 10 single crochet into the ring. Join.

Round 2:
Work 2 single crochet in each stitch around. Join.

Round 3:
Create 5 points:

Work 1 single crochet, 1 half-double crochet, 1 double crochet, chain 2, then slip stitch into the next stitch.

Repeat from * around until you have 5 star points.

Shape the points neatly and fasten off.

Burgundy Star Border

Join burgundy yarn around the star.

Work slip stitches or single crochet around the complete outside edge, following each point carefully.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Small Hanging Stars

Make several smaller stars using the same construction.

For each star, make a magic ring and work approximately 8–10 single crochets into the ring.

Create 5 points using combinations of:

  • Single crochet
  • Half-double crochet
  • Double crochet
  • Chain stitches
  • Slip stitches

Add a burgundy border around each star.

Assembly

Attach the large star securely to the top of the spiral.

Add a small burgundy star directly underneath the large star.

Attach 2–3 additional small red stars at different heights inside the spiral.

Use matching thread so the stars appear to float inside the tree.

Final shaping

Place the completed decoration on a flat surface.

Adjust each spiral turn by hand so the white sections form a smooth Christmas-tree silhouette.

Make the bottom spiral wider than the upper sections.

Secure the bottom section with a few discreet stitches if necessary.

The finished piece can be hung from the top star as a Christmas decoration or displayed as a freestanding spiral tree.
