Christmas Star Spiral Crochet Ornament

An original pattern inspired by the photo; the exact stitches in the pictured ornament may differ.

Materials

  • Worsted-weight yarn: burgundy, forest green and cream
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Small amount of stuffing, optional

US crochet terms

ch = chain · sl st = slip stitch · sc = single crochet · hdc = half double crochet · dc = double crochet · tr = treble crochet
Picot = ch 3, sl st into the first chain.

1. Burgundy star — make two

The starting ch 2 does not count as a stitch.

  • Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 2, work 10 dc into the ring. Pull closed and sl st into the first dc. (10)
  • Round 2: Ch 2, work 2 dc in each stitch around. Join. (20)
  • Round 3: Ch 2, repeat 2 dc in the next stitch, 1 dc in the next stitch around. Join. (30)
  • Round 4: Repeat the following sequence five times: sc in the next stitch, hdc in the next, dc in the next, (2 tr, picot, 2 tr) in the next, dc in the next, hdc in the next. Join and fasten off.

Align both stars with the right sides facing outward. Whipstitch their edges together with burgundy yarn. Add a little stuffing before closing if you want a softly padded star.

2. Striped spiral

Work lengthwise, beginning with forest green.

  • Foundation: Ch 62.
  • Row 1 — green: Work 3 dc in the third chain from the hook and 3 dc in every remaining chain. The skipped chains do not count as a stitch. (180 dc)
  • Row 2 — burgundy: Join burgundy, ch 1 and turn. Work 1 sc in each stitch across. (180 sc)
  • Row 3 — cream: Join cream, ch 1 and turn. Work 1 sc in each stitch across. (180 sc)

Fasten off and weave in the ends. Gently arrange the strip into an even corkscrew, following its natural curl. Avoid stretching or blocking it flat.

3. Cream tassel

  1. Wrap cream yarn around a 10 cm piece of cardboard approximately 30 times.
  2. Slide a separate strand beneath the wraps at one end and tie tightly.
  3. Cut through the opposite end.
  4. Wrap another strand around the tassel, about 2 cm below the top, and secure.
  5. Trim the bottom evenly.

4. Assembly

  • Sew one short end of the spiral securely to the bottom center of the star, between its two lower points.
  • Attach the tassel to the free end of the spiral.
  • With forest green yarn, ch 25. Fasten off, leaving long tails.
  • Sew both chain ends to the top point of the star to form a hanging loop.
  • Weave in all remaining ends and hang the ornament to arrange the curls. 🎄
