Step 1: Crochet the Christmas Tree
Make two identical triangular panels for each holder.
Row 1: Ch 4. Work 3 dc into the fourth chain from the hook. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 2 dc in the first stitch, 1 dc in each middle stitch, and 3 dc in the last stitch. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 3, work 2 dc in the first stitch, dc across, and 3 dc in the last stitch. Turn.
Rows 4–10: Repeat Row 3, increasing at both ends to create a gradually widening triangular Christmas tree.
For a more textured appearance, alternate rows of regular dc with shell-style stitches, adjusting the increases to maintain the triangular shape.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Step 2: Add the Scalloped Border
Using cream yarn for the green and red trees, or red yarn for the white tree:
- Join yarn at one bottom corner.
- Work sc evenly along the tree edge.
- For the scallops, repeat (sc, skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st) along the sides, adjusting spacing as needed.
- Work 3 sc at the top point.
- Continue along the opposite side.
Fasten off.
Step 3: Assemble the Cutlery Pocket
Place the two crocheted tree panels together with their right sides facing outward.
Using matching yarn, join the panels along the two sloping sides and bottom edge with slip stitches or single crochet.
Leave the upper portion of the front panel unattached to create an opening for the fork and spoon. For the layered appearance in the photo, fold the front panel’s pointed top downward before securing its sides.
Check that the pocket is wide enough to hold two pieces of cutlery securely.
Step 4: Crochet the Brown Tree Trunk
Using brown yarn:
Row 1: Ch 7. Sc in the second chain from the hook and across. Turn.
Rows 2–5: Ch 1, sc across. Turn.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Attach the small rectangular trunk to the center bottom of the Christmas tree.
Step 5: Make the Christmas Bow
Using red yarn:
Row 1: Ch 13. Sc in the second chain from the hook and across.
Rows 2–5: Ch 1, sc across.
Fasten off.
Wrap a strand of red yarn several times around the middle to form a bow. Make two short chains for the hanging ribbon tails and attach them beneath the bow.
Sew the bow onto the upper front of the Christmas tree.
Step 6: Add Holly Leaves and Berries
Holly leaves: Using green yarn, ch 7. Work sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc along the chain, then work around the opposite side to create a pointed leaf. Make two.
Berries: Using red yarn, make a magic ring and work 6 sc into the ring. Close tightly. Make three small berries.
Attach the leaves and berries above the bow.
Add two miniature gold bells below the bow if desired. Omit detachable bells if the holders may be accessible to small children.
Step 7: Final Assembly
Gently shape the Christmas tree and straighten the scalloped edges.
Insert a fork and spoon into the pocket. Repeat the process using different yarn colors to create a matching Christmas dinner-table set.
Color combinations:
- Forest green with cream trim
- Cream white with red trim
- Christmas red with cream trim
Finishing Tips
Lightly block the crocheted pieces to improve their shape. Cotton yarn works particularly well because it maintains stitch definition and creates a sturdy pocket.
Hand wash gently and lay flat to dry.
These festive Christmas tree cutlery holders make beautiful handmade table decorations and thoughtful holiday gifts!
