Part 1: Crochet the Angel’s Head
Using red yarn:
Round 1: 6 SC into MR. (6)
Round 2: INC around. (12)
Round 3: (1 SC, INC) × 6. (18)
Round 4: (2 SC, INC) × 6. (24)
Round 5: (3 SC, INC) × 6. (30)
Rounds 6–10: SC in each stitch. (30)
Round 11: (3 SC, DEC) × 6. (24)
Round 12: (2 SC, DEC) × 6. (18)
Round 13: (1 SC, DEC) × 6. (12)
Stuff the head firmly.
Round 14: DEC × 6. (6)
Fasten off and close the opening.
Part 2: Crochet the Spiral Body
Using red yarn:
Foundation: CH 81.
Row 1: Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 2 SC into each chain. (160)
Row 2: CH 3 (counts as DC), turn. Work 2 DC into each stitch across. (320)
Row 3: CH 3 (counts as DC), turn. Work 1 DC in each stitch across, replacing every fifth DC with (DC, CH 1, DC) in the same stitch to create decorative openings.
The increased fabric will naturally begin to curl into a spiral.
White edging:
Join white yarn along the outer edge.
Work (SC, CH 2, SC) into every third stitch, using SC between groups as needed to keep the edging smooth.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Gently arrange the crocheted strip into a vertical spiral with approximately 4–5 visible turns. Secure its upper end beneath the head. Use a few discreet stitches along the center if necessary to hold its hanging shape.
Part 3: Crochet the Angel Wings (Make 2)
Using white yarn:
Row 1: CH 12.
Row 2: Starting in the second chain, work 11 SC. Turn.
Row 3: CH 3, DC in the next stitch, (CH 2, skip 1 ST, DC in next ST) across.
Row 4: CH 3, turn. Work (2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC) into each CH-2 space.
Row 5: CH 3, turn. Work 3 DC into each CH-2 space, separated by CH 2.
Row 6: CH 1, turn. Work SC around the entire wing, placing 3 SC at each outer corner.
Red border:
Join red yarn and work SC evenly around the wing. At each outer corner, work (SC, CH 2, SC) to create a pointed shape.
Make the second wing as a mirror image during assembly.
Block both wings into gently curved triangular shapes.
Part 4: Crochet the Golden Halo
Using gold metallic yarn:
CH 28 and join with SL ST to form a ring, making sure the chain is not twisted.
Round 1: SC in each chain around.
Round 2: SL ST in each stitch around.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Shape into a circle and attach above the angel’s head.
Part 5: Assembly
- Sew the upper end of the spiral body securely beneath the head.
- Attach the two white lace wings symmetrically behind the head.
- Position the golden halo above the head.
- Crochet a red hanging cord using CH 45–55 and attach it through the top of the head.
- Arrange the spiral so the turns hang evenly.
- Lightly stiffen the wings and spiral if needed, then allow them to dry completely.
Finishing
Gently stretch and shape the spiral to create an elegant cascading effect. Make sure the white edging is visible along every turn.
Your handmade Christmas Spiral Angel is ready to hang!
Pattern tip: For a longer ornament, increase the foundation chain. For a fuller spiral, add another increase row. These adjustments will change the finished dimensions and may require additional shaping.
