Crochet Christmas Tree Pattern

This pattern makes a layered Christmas tree with red and green ruffles, white edging, a star, snowflakes, stockings, candy canes, bows and baubles. Finished size: about 30–35 cm / 12–14 in tall.

Materials

  • Worsted/DK yarn: dark green, red, white, gold and small amounts of brown
  • 3.5–4 mm crochet hook
  • Fiberfill
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle
  • Cardboard or foam cone for extra stability, optional
  • Small bells/beads, optional

Abbreviations

MR = magic ring, ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, inc = 2 stitches in the same stitch, BLO = back loop only.

1. Main Tree Cone – Dark Green

Work continuously in a spiral.

R1: MR, 6 sc.
R2: 6 sc.
R3: Inc around = 12.
R4–5: 12 sc.
R6: (1 sc, inc) × 6 = 18.
R7–8: 18 sc.
R9: (2 sc, inc) × 6 = 24.
R10–11: 24 sc.
R12: (3 sc, inc) × 6 = 30.

Continue in the same manner: work 2 plain rounds, then make an increase round with 6 evenly spaced increases. Continue until you have approximately 66–72 stitches and the cone measures around 28–30 cm.

Stuff firmly as you work, or place a foam/cardboard cone inside.

For a flat bottom, crochet a circle matching the bottom circumference, stuff the tree, then sew the circle to the base.

2. Layered Ruffles

Make approximately 5–6 ruffled layers, alternating red and green.

Join yarn around the tree at evenly spaced levels.

Ruffle Row 1: Ch 2, work 2 dc in every stitch around. Join.
Ruffle Row 2: Ch 2, repeat (1 dc, 2 dc in next stitch) around.
Fasten off.

This creates the full wavy skirt effect seen in the photo.

For the next layer, move several rounds lower on the cone and repeat, changing from red to green.

3. White Scalloped Border

Join white yarn around the lower edge of every ruffle.

Repeat:

sl st in next stitch, 5 dc in next stitch, sl st in next stitch

around the entire edge.

For a smaller border, use 3 hdc instead of 5 dc.

4. Crochet Star

With gold yarn:

R1: MR, 10 sc, join.
R2: Repeat 5 times: ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, tr; skip 1 stitch on center circle, sl st in next stitch.

You will have 5 star points.

Make a second star if you want it thick and firm. Sew the two pieces together lightly stuffed, then attach to the tree top.

5. Mini Christmas Baubles

With red or green:

R1: MR, 6 sc.
R2: Inc around = 12.
R3: (1 sc, inc) × 6 = 18.
R4–5: 18 sc.
R6: (1 sc, dec) × 6 = 12.

Stuff lightly.

R7: Dec around = 6.

Close and embroider vertical gold lines. Add a small hanging loop.

6. Mini Stocking

With red:

Ch 7.

Work 6 sc across for several rows to form the leg.

For the foot, crochet across approximately half the stitches, turn and work 2–3 short rows. Shape the toe with decreases, then sew the stocking edges together.

Join white yarn around the top and work one round of sc.

7. Candy Cane

With white yarn, crochet a chain about 12–15 cm long and work sc back across.

Make another narrow strip in red. Twist the two strips together and sew lightly to secure.

Insert thin craft wire only if the decoration will not be handled by children. Otherwise shape it naturally and stitch the curved top in position.

8. Snowflake

With white:

MR.

Work (ch 5, sl st into ring) × 6.

For a fuller snowflake, into each ch-5 loop work:

sc, ch 3, sc, ch 5, sc, ch 3, sc.

Fasten off and block.

9. Mini Bow

With red:

Ch 15, join into a ring.

Work 2–3 rounds of sc.

Flatten the ring and wrap yarn tightly several times around the center to create a bow shape.

Crochet or attach two small tails underneath.

Assembly

Arrange the decorations around the ruffles as in the picture: alternate snowflakes, stockings, baubles, candy canes, bows and bells. Sew each decoration securely onto the tree. Place the large gold star at the top and add small beads between decorations for extra Christmas detail.

For the richest look, keep the main palette dark green + bright red + white + gold and place the ornaments unevenly rather than in perfectly straight rows.
