An original pattern inspired by the picture. It recreates the look; the exact pattern cannot be determined from a photo. This version is untested.
Materials
- DK cotton yarn: burgundy, teal, forest green, plum or antique gold
- Ivory yarn for the snowflake and bell
- Small amounts of green and red yarn for holly
- 3 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle and scissors
- Optional gold beads and a small jingle bell
Use a slightly smaller hook if your stitches look loose.
US crochet terms
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
- MR = magic ring
Work the star and bell in joined rounds. Starting chains do not count as stitches.
1. Six-point star
Use your chosen main color.
Round 1: Make an MR, ch 1, work 12 sc into the ring. Pull tight and sl st into the first sc. (12 stitches)
Round 2: Ch 1, inc in each stitch around. Join. (24 stitches)
Round 3: Ch 1, repeat the following 6 times:
- Sc in the next stitch.
- Hdc in the next stitch.
- Work (dc, ch 2, dc) in the next stitch.
- Hdc in the next stitch.
Join to the first sc. You have 6 points.
Fasten off and weave in the ends. For a firmer ornament, make two stars, embroider the front, then sew their edges together with matching yarn.
2. Embroidered snowflake
With ivory yarn and a yarn needle:
- Stitch six straight spokes from the center toward the six star points.
- Stop each spoke before the outer edge.
- Add two short diagonal stitches near the end of each spoke to form a small V.
- Add another pair of branches farther inward if there is enough room.
- Secure the yarn neatly on the back.
Keep the embroidery relaxed so the star stays flat.
3. Crochet spiral
Use the same main color.
Ch 41.
Row 1: Work 3 dc into the second chain from the hook and into every remaining chain. (120 dc)
Fasten off, leaving a long sewing tail.
Gently twist the strip in one direction to arrange the corkscrew. The increases create the curl naturally. Avoid pressing or blocking it flat.
For a shorter spiral, start with ch 31 and work the same way. (90 dc)
4. Ivory crochet bell
Start at the narrow top.
Round 1: MR, ch 1, 6 sc into the ring. Join. (6)
Round 2: Ch 1, inc around. Join. (12)
Round 3: Ch 1, sc around. Join. (12)
Round 4: Ch 1, repeat (sc in next stitch, inc) 6 times. Join. (18)
Round 5: Ch 1, sc around. Join. (18)
Round 6: Ch 1, repeat (sc in next 2 stitches, inc) 6 times. Join. (24)
Round 7: Ch 1, sc around. Join. (24)
Round 8: Ch 1, repeat (sc in next 3 stitches, inc) 6 times. Join. (30)
Round 9: Ch 1, repeat (sc in next 4 stitches, inc) 6 times. Join. (36)
Fasten off and weave in the end. Leave the bottom open and gently shape the rim outward.
5. Small holly leaves — make 2
With green yarn, ch 6.
Beginning in the second chain from the hook:
- Sl st in the next chain.
- Sc in the next chain.
- Hdc in the next chain.
- Sc in the next chain.
- Work 3 sc in the last chain.
Continue along the opposite side of the foundation chain:
- Sc in the next chain.
- Hdc in the next chain.
- Sc in the next chain.
- Sl st in the last chain.
Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.
6. Red berries — make 3
With red yarn, make an MR and work 5 sc into it.
Pull the ring closed and sl st into the first sc. Fasten off. Use the yarn tail to gather the small piece into a rounded berry.
Sew the leaves and berries onto the front of the ivory bell.
7. Hanging loop
With the main color, ch 25–30.
Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail. Sew both ends securely to the upper star point to form a loop.
8. Assemble the ornament
- Sew the top of the spiral to the bottom star point.
- Sew the lower end of the spiral to the crown of the ivory bell.
- Add a gold bead at each connection if desired.
- Secure a jingle bell beneath the crochet bell using a separate strand anchored through the crown.
- Weave in all ends and check each attachment.
Lightly block the star before assembly, leaving the spiral curled. Repeat in your chosen colors to create the matching set shown in the picture.
