Materials
- DK cotton yarn in emerald green and cream
- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle and scissors
US terms: ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet.
1. Foundation — emerald
Ch 62 loosely.
2. Create the curl — emerald
Work 3 dc into the third chain from the hook and into every remaining chain. The skipped chains do not count as a stitch. 180 dc.
The increases make the strip curl naturally. Turn.
3. Cream stripe
Join cream. Ch 1, then work 1 hdc in every stitch across. 180 hdc. Turn.
4. Green edging
Join emerald. Ch 1, then work 1 sc in every stitch across. 180 sc.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
5. Shape the spiral
Starting at one end, arrange the strip into a continuous corkscrew, guiding every turn in the same direction. Gently spread the turns so the cream stripe shows clearly.
If needed, lightly dampen and shape by hand. Let dry without stretching or pressing flat.
6. Hanging cord
With emerald, make a chain slightly longer than your shaped spiral, leaving long yarn tails. Fasten off.
Pass the cord down through the open center of the spiral. Sew it securely to the upper and lower ends of the strip, leaving enough slack to preserve the curls. Form a hanging loop at the top.
Hang and adjust the turns until evenly spaced.
Size adjustment: For a longer version, add foundation chains. Each additional foundation chain produces 3 more stitches in every subsequent row. Finished length and curl depend on yarn, tension, and shaping.
