US crochet terms

ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
MR = magic ring
st = stitch

1. Crochet the green covering

The spiral is made from a narrow crocheted strip sewn around a shaped wire.

Ch 7.

Row 1: Sc in the second ch from the hook and each remaining ch. Turn. 6 sc

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across. Turn. 6 sc

Repeat Row 2 until the strip reaches your desired length. Start with approximately 150–180 cm for a medium hanging decoration.

Check the width by folding the strip around your wire. The long edges should meet comfortably. Adjust the starting chain if necessary.

Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.

2. Cover and shape the wire

Using pliers, turn both wire ends into small closed loops so no sharp ends remain exposed.

Lay the wire along the centre of the crocheted strip. Fold the strip lengthwise around it and whipstitch the long edges together. Keep the seam neat and consistent.

Wrap the covered wire around a cylindrical container approximately 12–15 cm wide. Remove it carefully, then gently separate the coils to form a hanging helix.

Adjust the spacing until the turns look balanced. The finished height depends on your wire length, coil diameter and spacing.

3. Add the gold details

Sew gold beads onto the green covering at regular intervals, approximately every 3–5 cm.

For extra sparkle, loosely wind a strand of gold yarn around the green covering and secure it with small stitches.

Keep the beads evenly distributed so the ornament hangs comfortably.

4. Crochet the ivory snowflakes — make 8–10

Use fine ivory yarn and the smaller hook.

Round 1: Make an MR. Ch 1, work 6 sc into the ring. Pull the ring closed and sl st into the first sc. 6 sc

Round 2: Ch 1. Work 2 sc into each stitch around. Join with a sl st. 12 sc

Round 3:
Repeat the following sequence 6 times:

  • Sl st into the next sc.
  • Ch 7.
  • Sl st into the fourth ch from the hook to form the first little loop.
  • Ch 3, sl st into the same chain where you joined the first loop.
  • Ch 3, sl st into that same chain again.
  • Sl st into each of the 3 remaining chains back towards the centre.
  • Sl st into the next sc of Round 2.

This creates six arms, each with three small loops at its tip.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

5. Crochet the gold stars — make 8–12

Round 1: Make an MR. Ch 1, work 10 sc into the ring. Pull closed and join with a sl st. 10 sc

Round 2: Repeat the following 5 times:

  • Ch 5.
  • Sl st into the second ch from the hook.
  • Sc into the next ch.
  • Hdc into the next ch.
  • Dc into the final ch.
  • Skip the next stitch of Round 1 and sl st into the following stitch.

Join neatly at the base of the first point. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

6. Block the motifs

Apply fabric stiffener according to its instructions.

Pin each snowflake and star flat, stretching the points gently into shape. Allow them to dry completely before assembly.

7. Attach the decorations

Cut hanging threads in different lengths, approximately 5–12 cm.

Sew one end securely to a motif and the other to the underside of a spiral coil. Alternate ivory snowflakes and gold stars.

Distribute the decorations along the spiral, leaving enough space for them to hang without catching on the coil below.

8. Finish and hang

Attach a strong hanging cord to the closed loop at the top. Lift the ornament and adjust the coils and motif positions until it hangs evenly.

Your emerald-and-gold Christmas spiral is ready to display beside a window or Christmas tree!

Hang securely, away from flames and out of reach of small children and pets: the decoration contains wire and small beads.
