Emerald Green Floral Lace Bedspread

This is an original, untested interpretation inspired by the photo. The exact stitch counts and construction cannot be determined from the image alone.

The design combines large loop-petal flowers with open mesh squares. Use the same emerald yarn throughout.

Materials

  • Cotton yarn: sport or fine DK weight
  • 3–3.5 mm crochet hook, adjusted to your yarn
  • Yarn needle, scissors and stitch markers
  • Blocking mat and rustproof pins

Make and block a sample before purchasing yarn for the entire bedspread.

US abbreviations

ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
st = stitch
sp = space

1. Eight-petal flower

Center: Ch 8 and join with a sl st to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, work 16 sc into the ring. Join to the first sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the first st, ch 16, skip the next st. Repeat [sc in the next st, ch 16, skip the next st] seven more times. Join to the first sc. You have eight petal loops.

Round 3: Work [20 sc into the next ch-16 loop, sl st into the next anchoring sc] eight times. Keep stitches evenly distributed around each loop. Fasten off.

Lay the flower flat and gently shape each loop into a long oval petal.

2. Open mesh square

Ch 20.

Row 1: Dc in the eighth chain from the hook. Repeat [ch 2, skip 2 chains, dc in the next chain] four times. You have five mesh spaces.

Rows 2–5: Ch 5 and turn; this counts as the first dc and ch-2 space. Skip the first space, dc in the next dc. Repeat [ch 2, dc in the next dc] across, placing the final dc in the third chain of the turning chain.

Border: Ch 1. Work sc around the square, placing 2 sc into each mesh space and 1 sc into each dc. At each corner, work (sc, ch 2, sc). Join and fasten off.

Block the square flat. It can be positioned like a diamond during assembly.

3. Arrange and join

For a lace effect inspired by the photograph, alternate flowers and mesh squares:

  • Lay out the motifs on a flat surface.
  • Position each flower with two petal tips facing each side.
  • Place mesh squares between the flowers.
  • Connect adjacent pieces at their nearest points using short chain bridges.

Joining bridge: Join yarn with a sc through one motif edge, ch 3–7, then sc into the neighboring motif. Adjust the chain length so both pieces lie flat.

Use two attachment points along each shared side. Work across the arrangement in rows, fastening off where necessary. Fill larger gaps with additional chain bridges, joining at their midpoints with a sc.

Important: Block one flower and one square first. Adjust the square’s row count and starting chain if their dimensions do not suit your arrangement. Add or remove starting chains in multiples of three.

4. Bedspread size

Measure your mattress and add your preferred side and foot drops.

For example:

150 cm mattress width + 35 cm on each side = 220 cm finished width.

Build the motif arrangement to your measurements. Check the size after blocking, since open cotton lace can stretch.

5. Outer edging

Round 1: Sc around the outside edges, using chain bridges to span deep gaps. Keep the edge relaxed and flat.

Round 2: Repeat [sc in the next st, ch 3, skip the next st] around. At corners, add an extra ch-3 space if needed.

Round 3: Work (sc, 3 dc, sc) into each ch-3 space. Join and fasten off.

6. Matching pillow fronts

Make a smaller panel using the same flower-and-mesh arrangement. Block it to the dimensions of a plain fabric cushion cover, then sew it onto the front with small, even stitches.

Weave in all ends and wet-block the finished pieces, opening the petals and mesh gently.
