- One 20–25 mm button
- Yarn needle and scissors
- Small amount of stuffing for berries
US abbreviations
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet
inc = 2 sc in one stitch
dec = single crochet 2 stitches together
MR = magic ring
1. Cover the ring
Make a slip knot and attach the yarn around the ring.
Work sc around the ring itself, enclosing it inside the stitches. Slide the stitches together as you work until the entire ring is covered evenly. The number of stitches depends on the ring diameter and yarn thickness.
Join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
2. Make the button strap
The strap folds around a kitchen rail and buttons onto itself.
Ch 11.
Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and across. (10)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc across. (10)
Repeat Row 2 until the strap measures approximately 19 cm.
Buttonhole row: Ch 1, turn, sc in the first 3 stitches, ch 4, skip 4 stitches, sc in the last 3 stitches.
Next row: Ch 1, turn, sc in the first 3 stitches, work 4 sc into the chain space, sc in the last 3 stitches. (10)
Final row: Ch 1, turn, sc across. Fasten off.
Check the buttonhole against your button before finishing; adjust its chain length if necessary.
Optional edging: Join yarn at a corner and work sc evenly around the strap, placing 3 sc in each corner. Keep the buttonhole open.
3. Attach the strap and button
Sew the strap’s starting edge securely around several stitches at the top of the covered ring.
Sew the button onto the front of the strap, approximately 3 cm above the ring. Fold the free end over your intended rail and bring the buttonhole down onto the button.
Check the fit before sewing the button permanently. Adjust its position to suit the rail.
4. Small five-petal flowers
Make 2–3 per holder.
Round 1: With the center color, work 10 sc into a MR. Join with sl st. (10)
Round 2: Change to the petal color. Repeat 5 times:
[Sl st in next stitch; in the following stitch work: ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sl st].
Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.
Use peach petals with rust centers, or lavender petals with plum centers, to match the edited photo.
5. Large layered flower
Center
Round 1: Work 6 sc into a MR. (6)
Round 2: Inc in each stitch. (12)
Join with sl st.
Front petals
Using the petal color and working in the front loops only, repeat 6 times:
[Sl st in next stitch; in the following stitch work: ch 2, 4 dc, ch 2, sl st].
Fasten off.
Back petals
Join yarn to an unused back loop of Round 2.
Repeat 6 times, working into the unused back loops:
[Sl st in next loop; in the following loop work: ch 3, 5 tr, ch 3, sl st].
Fasten off. Gently arrange the larger petals behind the smaller ones.
6. Sunflower-style flower
With deep plum or brown:
Round 1: Work 6 sc into a MR. (6)
Round 2: Inc in each stitch. (12)
Round 3: [Sc, inc] × 6. (18)
Join with sl st and change to apricot or yellow.
Petal round: Repeat 9 times:
[Sl st in next stitch; in the following stitch work: ch 2, 2 dc, 1 tr, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st].
Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.
7. Leaves
Ch 10.
Starting in the second chain from the hook, work:
sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, sc.
Work 3 sc in the last chain to turn around the tip.
Working along the opposite side of the chain, work:
sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, sc.
Join with sl st and fasten off.
Make 3–5 leaves per holder. For a raised center vein, sew a loose line of backstitches along the middle.
8. Optional berries
Work in continuous rounds with purple or red.
Round 1: 6 sc in a MR. (6)
Round 2: [Sc, inc] × 3. (9)
Round 3: [2 sc, inc] × 3. (12)
Rounds 4–5: Sc around. (12)
Round 6: [2 sc, dec] × 3. (9)
Add a little stuffing.
Round 7: [Sc, dec] × 3. (6)
Fasten off and draw the opening closed. The narrow starting end forms the berry’s point; the closed end sits beneath the leaves.
Add small contrasting seed stitches if desired.
Berry cap: With green yarn, work 5 sc into a MR. Join. Repeat [ch 3, sl st in second chain from hook, sc in next chain, sl st in next center stitch] five times. Sew onto the broad end of the berry.
9. Assemble
Arrange the leaves at the junction between the strap and ring. Sew them securely in place, then add the flowers or berries on top.
Keep decorations below the button so the strap opens easily. Sew through several stitches on each piece and secure all ends firmly.
Fold a hand towel lengthwise, pass it through the ring and pull both ends down evenly.
Care: Hand-wash or follow the yarn and ring manufacturer’s care instructions. Reshape and lay flat to dry.
