Floral Heart Crochet Blanket

Floral Heart Crochet Blanket

The blanket features lace hearts in pale sage with dark olive outlines and floral joins. The exact pattern can’t be recovered from the photo alone. This is a simplified, untested interpretation; make and block one sample heart before making the full blanket.

Materials

  • Cotton yarn in pale sage and dark olive
  • Hook suitable for your yarn, approximately 2.5–3.5 mm
  • Yarn needle and blocking pins

US crochet terms: ch = chain; sl st = slip stitch; sc = single crochet; hdc = half double crochet; dc = double crochet; tr = treble crochet.

1. Flower center — sage

Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3, counting as the first dc, then work 11 dc into the ring. Join to the top of ch 3. 12 dc.

Round 2: Ch 1. Work (sc in next stitch, ch 3) 12 times. Join to the first sc. 12 loops.

Round 3: Sl st into the first loop. Ch 1. Work 2 sc into each ch-3 loop. Join. 24 sc.

2. Shape the heart — sage

Ch 1, then work around the 24 stitches as follows. Each numbered instruction uses one stitch from the previous round:

StitchWork into that stitch
1Sl st — top indentation
2Hdc
32 dc
43 tr
52 tr
62 dc
7–111 dc in each
12Hdc
13Dc, ch 2, dc — bottom point
14Hdc
15–191 dc in each
202 dc
212 tr
223 tr
232 dc
24Hdc

Join to the first sl st. Fasten off.

3. Olive outline

Join dark olive at the top indentation.

Ch 1 and sc around the heart, following these shaping instructions:

  • At the top indentation, work a sl st.
  • At the center stitch of each 3-tr group, work 2 sc to keep the lobes flat.
  • In the bottom ch-2 space, work sc, ch 2, sc.

Join and fasten off. If the outline curls, add an extra sc where needed along each lobe.

4. Sage lace edging

Join sage beside the top indentation.

Work around: sc, ch 4, skip 1 stitch, repeating to the bottom point. In the point space, work sc, ch 5, sc. Continue the same repeat up the other side, adjusting the final skip near the indentation.

For the final round, work sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc into each ch-4 loop. In the bottom ch-5 loop, work sc, hdc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, hdc, sc.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

5. Assemble the blanket

Block the hearts flat first. Lay them in staggered rows, with all points facing downward.

Join neighboring scallops with sage yarn using sc into one scallop, ch 3–5, sc into the facing scallop. Keep checking that the joins lie flat.

For small flowers between hearts:

  1. Make a magic ring.
  2. Work (ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st into ring) five times.
  3. Tighten the ring and sew the petal tips to nearby heart edges.

Repeat hearts until you reach your desired size. Finish the blanket with one round of sc followed by a shell edging: skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in the next stitch, skip 2, sl st in the next.

This version gives a floral heart effect; the much finer openwork in the photo would require a more detailed lace chart.
