This original pattern is inspired by the picture. It creates a similar orange crescent moon, black-edged spiral, and five little bats. It is an untested recreation; the exact stitches used in the pictured ornament cannot be determined from the image.
Materials
- Sport-weight cotton yarn in orange and black.
- A 2.5–3 mm crochet hook.
- Polyester stuffing.
- Yarn needle, scissors, and stitch markers.
- Orange embroidery thread for the eyes.
- Flexible craft wire to support the moon and spiral.
- Pliers and fabric tape to cover the wire ends.
- Strong thread for assembly.
Use the same yarn weight throughout. Finished size depends on your yarn, tension, and the length of the spiral.

Work the moon and bat bodies in continuous rounds. Mark the first stitch of each round.
1. Orange crescent moon
The moon is a tapered stuffed tube that you curve into a crescent.
With orange yarn:
- Round 1: Work 4 sc into a MR. 4 stitches
- Round 2: (Sc, inc) twice. 6
- Round 3: Sc around. 6
- Round 4: (Sc, inc) three times. 9
- Round 5: Sc around. 9
- Round 6: (2 sc, inc) three times. 12
- Round 7: Sc around. 12
- Round 8: (3 sc, inc) three times. 15
- Round 9: Sc around. 15
- Round 10: (4 sc, inc) three times. 18
- Rounds 11–22: Sc around. 18 stitches per round
- Round 23: (4 sc, dec) three times. 15
- Round 24: Sc around. 15
- Round 25: (3 sc, dec) three times. 12
- Round 26: Sc around. 12
- Round 27: (2 sc, dec) three times. 9
- Round 28: Sc around. 9
- Round 29: (Sc, dec) three times. 6
- Round 30: Sc around. 6
- Round 31: Dec three times. 3
Stuff gradually, keeping both tips lightly filled. Before closing, insert a wire support with both ends bent into small loops and covered with fabric tape. Keep the wire completely enclosed.
Fasten off and close the remaining opening. Bend the tube into a crescent with both tips pointing to the right. Adjust the curve until the center looks rounded and the tips taper neatly.
2. Orange spiral with black edging
The picture shows a broad, open spiral. A supported crochet strip gives you control over that shape.
With orange yarn, make a foundation chain approximately 90–120 cm long. Measure it relaxed, without stretching.
Row 1: Hdc in the third chain from the hook and in every remaining chain. The two skipped chains do not count as a stitch.
Fasten off.
Join black yarn to the first hdc.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in every hdc across. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
For a thicker strip, add another orange hdc row before working the black edging.
Shape the spiral
- Cut a wire slightly shorter than the crochet strip.
- Bend both wire ends into small loops and cover them with fabric tape.
- Place the wire along the orange foundation edge.
- With orange yarn, whipstitch closely around the wire and through the foundation edge to encase it.
- Coil one end into a small central curl.
- Continue outward into approximately three open turns.
- Shape the remaining lower end into a loose curved tail.
Arrange the strip with the orange edge toward the inside and the black edging toward the outside. Keep the wire hidden and the spaces between turns even.
3. Bat bodies — make five
With black yarn:
- Round 1: Work 6 sc into a MR. 6
- Round 2: Inc in each stitch. 12
- Round 3: (Sc, inc) six times. 18
- Rounds 4–7: Sc around. 18 per round
- Round 8: (Sc, dec) six times. 12
Stuff lightly.
- Round 9: Dec six times. 6
Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail. Thread the tail through the front loops of the remaining stitches, pull closed, and secure.
4. Bat wings — make ten
Make two wings for each bat.
With black yarn:
- Row 1: Ch 3. Sc in the second chain from the hook and in the next chain. 2
- Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Inc in both stitches. 4
- Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Inc, 2 sc, inc. 6
- Row 4: Ch 1, turn. Inc, 4 sc, inc. 8
- Row 5: Ch 1, turn. Inc, 6 sc, inc. 10
The narrow starting end attaches to the body.
For a pointed bat-wing outline, sc around the two sloping edges, adding a picot at each outer corner: ch 3, sl st into the first of those chains. Work loosely enough to keep the wing flat.
Fasten off with a long sewing tail. Make the second wing to match, then turn it over for the opposite side.
5. Bat ears — make ten
With black yarn:
- Ch 3.
- Sc in the second chain from the hook.
- Hdc in the last chain.
Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail. Sew two ears onto the upper part of each body, with the narrow tips pointing upward.
6. Assemble the bats
Sew a wing to each side of every body. Secure the narrow end firmly, leaving the wider section free.
Embroider two small orange eyes between the ears using two or three short stitches for each eye. Weave in all ends.
7. Assemble the hanging ornament
Lay the moon, spiral, and bats flat before attaching them.
- Place the crescent above the spiral.
- Connect the moon’s lower center to the spiral’s inner curl with a vertical orange cord.
- Add two diagonal orange cords from the moon’s tips to the upper outer turn of the spiral.
- Adjust all three cords until the spiral hangs level.
To match the picture, place the bats approximately as follows:
- Upper left, beneath the moon.
- Upper right, beneath the moon.
- Left side of the outer spiral.
- Lower right side of the spiral.
- Hanging below the lower turn on a short orange cord.
Sew each attached bat through several stitches so its weight is distributed.
8. Hanging loop and finishing
With orange yarn, ch 25–35. Fasten off, leaving long tails. Sew both ends securely to the top center of the moon.
Hang the ornament and adjust the wire gently until the spiral stays open and the moon faces forward. Trim loose threads and check every attachment.
Keep all wire ends enclosed. This finished piece is a hanging decoration and should be kept out of children’s reach.
