Materials
- Fine cotton thread or sport-weight yarn in light blue
- Hook 1.75–2.5 mm (use a smaller hook for a firm, crisp snowflake)
- 13–19 small gold beads (approx. 3 mm)
- Keyring + short chain
- Tapestry needle
Abbreviations (US terms)
- MR = magic ring
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
- picot = ch 3, sl st in first ch
Pattern
Round 1 – Center
Make a MR.
6 sc in MR. Pull tight.
Join with sl st to first sc. (6 sc)
(Sew or slide 1 gold bead into the very center now or at the end.)
Round 2 – Inner spaces
ch 1, sc in next sc, ch 3; repeat from * 5 more times.
Join with sl st to first sc.
(6 sc + 6 ch-3 spaces)
Round 3 – Small inner petals
sl st into first ch-3 space.
In ch-3 space work: sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc; sc in next sc of Round 2; repeat around.
Join.
(6 small petals with a hole in the middle of each)
Round 4 – Arms
sl st to the top of a petal (the dc).
ch 3, sc in top of next petal; repeat 5 times.
Join.
(6 ch-3 spaces that form the 6 arms)
Round 5 – Points
sl st into first ch-3 space.
In each ch-3 space work:
(sc, hdc, dc, ch 3, dc, hdc, sc)
Join.
Round 6 – Scalloped edge + tips
sl st to a ch-3 space at the tip.
In each tip space work:
(sc, hdc, 2 dc, picot, 2 dc, hdc, sc)
Between points: sl st or sc as needed to keep the shape flat.
Join.
Round 7 (optional – extra volume like the photo)
Work small shells or groups of 3–4 dc in the spaces between the points to create the wavy, scalloped outer edge.
Gold Beads
Two easy methods:
- Pre-string the beads onto the yarn before you start. Slide a bead up when you make the picot or last stitch of each tip and each inner intersection.
- Sew on after blocking (easier for exact placement):
- 1 bead in the center
- 1 bead at each of the 6 tips
- 1 bead at each of the 6 inner junctions
Finishing
- Block flat (light steam or fabric stiffener) so the 6 points open nicely.
- Attach the keyring to one tip (or thread a short chain through a stitch at the top).
- Weave in all ends.
Finished size is about 7–8 cm (2.75–3.25 inches) across after blocking.
