Rainbow Heart Spiral Hanging

An approximate crochet pattern inspired by your photo—not the creator’s original pattern. The open spiral will need craft wire to hold its shape.

Materials

  • Cotton yarn: purple, blue, turquoise, yellow, orange, pink and magenta
  • 2.5–3 mm crochet hook
  • Flexible craft wire, yarn needle and scissors
  • Clear thread or matching yarn for suspending the hearts

US abbreviations: ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, tr = treble crochet.

1. Crochet the hearts — make 7

These make simple rounded hearts; the hearts in the photo are longer and more pointed.

Round 1: Into a magic ring, work ch 2, 3 tr, 4 dc, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1, 4 dc, 3 tr, ch 2, sl st into the ring. Pull the ring closed.

Round 2: Ch 1; sc into the first ch-2 space; 2 hdc in each of the next 3 stitches; hdc in each of the next 4 stitches; sc in the ch-1 space; (sc, ch 2, sc) in the bottom tr; sc in the next ch-1 space; hdc in each of the next 4 stitches; 2 hdc in each of the next 3 stitches; sc in the final ch-2 space; sl st into the centre cleft.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Lightly block each heart.

2. Crochet the spiral ribbon

The photo’s outer structure can be approximated with one long, wire-supported lace ribbon, twisted around the hanging hearts.

Foundation: Chain to approximately 160–190 cm, loosely. Use an odd number of chains. Adjust the length for your desired hanging size.

Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and in every chain across. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, skip the next stitch, dc in the following stitch; repeat ch 1, skip 1 stitch, dc in next stitch across. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in every dc and every ch-1 space across.

Change colours along the ribbon to create rainbow sections. For a simpler version, use rainbow yarn.

3. Add the support

Weave flexible craft wire through both long edges of the ribbon. Fold the wire ends back securely and cover them with yarn so no sharp points remain exposed.

Gently shape the ribbon into seven open spiral turns. Keep each opening slightly larger than a heart.

4. Assemble

  1. Make a strong hanging loop at the top.
  2. Suspend a central strand from the loop down through the spiral.
  3. Attach the seven hearts along this strand, with one heart centred inside each spiral opening.
  4. Secure the ribbon’s top and bottom to the central strand. Add small securing stitches wherever needed to maintain the spacing.
  5. Add a purple tassel at the bottom.

Suggested finished size: approximately 65–80 cm long × 12–16 cm wide. Adjust the spiral by hand after hanging.
