This photo-inspired pattern creates a six-point star with a puff-stitch flower center. It is an original, untested interpretation; the exact stitches in the pictured ornament cannot be confirmed from the image.

Puff stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat twice more in the same stitch—7 loops on hook. Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops, then ch 1 to secure. This securing chain does not count as a chain in the instructions below.
Beginning ch 2 does not count as a stitch.
1. Make the flower center
Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 1, work 12 sc into the ring. Tighten and join with a sl st to the first sc. 12 sc.
Round 2: Ch 1. Make 1 puff in the next sc, ch 3, skip the next sc. Repeat from * to * six times total. Join to the top of the first puff.
6 puffs and 6 ch-3 spaces.
Round 3: Sl st into the first ch-3 space. Ch 2. Work 5 dc in that space, ch 2. Work 5 dc in the next ch-3 space, ch 2. Repeat around. Join to the first dc.
Six groups of 5 dc, separated by six ch-2 corner spaces.
Fasten off. This forms the central hexagon.
2. Make the six star points
Work each point separately over one 5-dc group. Begin with the right side facing you.
Row 1: Join yarn in the ch-2 space immediately before the chosen group. Ch 2, work 1 dc in that space, 1 dc in each of the next 5 dc, then 1 dc in the following ch-2 space. Turn. 7 dc.
Row 2: Ch 2. Dc2tog over the first 2 stitches, dc in the next 3 stitches, dc2tog over the last 2 stitches. Turn. 5 stitches.
Row 3: Ch 2. Dc2tog over the first 2 stitches, dc in the next stitch, dc2tog over the last 2 stitches. Turn. 3 stitches.
Row 4: Ch 2. Work a dc3tog across all 3 stitches:
- Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
- Repeat in each of the next 2 stitches.
- Yarn over and pull through all 4 remaining loops.
Ch 1 and fasten off.
Repeat for the remaining five groups. Neighboring points use the same corner space at their bases.
3. Add the border
With the right side facing, join yarn at a valley between two points.
- Sc evenly up the side of the next point, starting with approximately 2 sc around each dc row end.
- At the tip, work (sc, ch 2, sc) into the top of the dc3tog.
- Sc evenly down the other side.
- Work 1 sl st into the ch-2 corner space at the valley.
Repeat around all six points. Join to the first sc and fasten off.
Adjust the number of side stitches if the edge ripples or pulls inward.
4. Add raised decorative lines — optional
To echo the raised red outlines in the photo, surface slip stitch six lines across the right side, running from the flower center toward the valleys between the points. Keep the stitches loose so they do not distort the fabric.
5. Shape and finish
Weave in all ends. Dampen the star, pin its six tips evenly, and let it dry completely. Apply fabric stiffener according to its instructions if you want a firm hanging ornament.
Thread a short length of twine through one tip’s ch-2 space and tie a hanging loop.
