Materials
- Sport-weight cotton yarn: royal blue, golden yellow, and cream
- 2.5–3 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle and scissors
- Blocking mat and rustproof pins
Use the same yarn weight throughout. Finished size depends on your yarn, tension, and number of motifs.
US terms
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
inc = 2 stitches in the same stitch
st = stitch
Beginning chains do not count as stitches.
1. Blue circular motifs — make 5
Work in joined rounds with royal blue. Begin each round with ch 2; join to the first dc with a sl st.
- Round 1: Make a magic ring; work 12 dc into the ring. Pull closed. 12
- Round 2: 2 dc in every stitch. 24
- Round 3: Repeat (dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) around. 36
- Round 4: Repeat (dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. 48
- Round 5: Repeat (dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. 60
- Round 6: Repeat (dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. 72
- Round 7: Repeat (dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. 84
- Round 8: Repeat (dc in next 6 sts, 2 dc in next st) around. 96
Fasten off and weave in the ends. Block each circle flat before assembly.
2. Gold lace fans — make 5
These semicircular pieces form the alternating gold curves beside the blue circles.
With gold, make a magic ring. Work back and forth, turning after each row.
- Row 1: Ch 2, work 7 dc into the ring. Tighten into a semicircle. 7
- Row 2: Ch 2, turn; 2 dc in every stitch. 14
- Row 3: Ch 2, turn; (dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) 7 times. 21
- Row 4: Ch 2, turn; (dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) 7 times. 28
- Row 5: Ch 1, turn; sc in first st. Repeat (ch 4, skip 2 sts, sc in next st) 9 times. 9 chain spaces
- Row 6: Ch 1, turn; work (sc, ch 5, sc) into each ch-4 space. 9 loops
- Row 7: Ch 1, turn; work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) into each ch-5 loop.
Fasten off, leaving a long sewing tail. Block gently to open the lace.
3. Layered flowers — make 3
Each flower consists of three separate pieces sewn together.
Small cream flower
- Make a magic ring; work 6 sc into it. Join with a sl st.
- In each sc, work (sl st, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st).
- Finish with 6 petals. Fasten off.
Medium gold flower
- Make a magic ring; work 12 sc into it. Join.
- Repeat 6 times: (sl st in next st, ch 2, 4 dc in next st, ch 2, sl st in that same st).
- Fasten off.
Large gold or blue flower
- Make a magic ring; work 12 sc into it. Join.
- Next round: 2 sc in each stitch. 24
- Repeat 6 times: (sl st in next st, hdc in next st, 5 dc in next st, hdc in next st).
- Join and fasten off.
Stack the small cream flower over the medium gold flower and the large flower. Rotate the petals slightly so all layers show, then sew through their centers.
4. Leaves — make 12–18
Make a mixture of blue and gold leaves.
Ch 10.
- Starting in the second chain from the hook, work: sl st, sc, hdc, dc in next 4 chains, hdc, 3 sc in the last chain.
- Continue along the opposite side of the foundation chain: hdc, dc in next 4 chains, hdc, sc, sl st.
- Join at the tip and fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.
For a raised central vein, embroider a line of chain stitches along the center.
5. Arrange the flowing runner
Lay all pieces on a flat surface before sewing.
- Arrange the five blue circles lengthwise, alternating slightly to the left and right. Let neighboring edges overlap just enough to sew them securely.
- Place one gold fan partly beneath each circle, with its scalloped edge facing outward.
- Alternate the fans: first left, then right, continuing down the runner.
- Adjust the overlap so the gold sections visually connect into a flowing wave. Keep the open lace exposed.
- Pin everything flat. Sew the overlapping solid sections together using matching yarn and small, hidden stitches.
The fans create a segmented interpretation of the image’s continuous gold ribbon.
6. Add the flowers and finish
Sew one layered flower near the upper end, one at the center, and one near the lower end. Place groups of blue and gold leaves beneath each flower before securing them.
Weave in all ends. Lightly dampen and block the assembled runner, opening the lace without stretching the blue circles. Let it dry completely flat.
To make it longer: Add more blue circles and gold fans, maintaining the alternating arrangement.
