Introduction
Salisbury steak is a classic comfort food made with seasoned ground beef patties served with a rich mushroom and onion gravy. It is hearty, flavorful, and often served with mashed potatoes for a satisfying meal. The dish became popular in American home cooking and remains a favorite family dinner.
Ingredients
For the steaks
500 g ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the mushroom onion gravy
2 tablespoons butter or oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cups sliced mushrooms
2 tablespoons all purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until everything is well combined.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties to form the Salisbury steaks.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the patties for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side until nicely browned. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet melt the butter or heat the oil. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3 minutes until softened.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for another 4 to 5 minutes until they release their moisture and become tender.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms and stir well. Cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder.
- Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer and cook until it thickens. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Return the browned patties to the skillet, spoon the gravy over them, cover, and simmer for about 10 minutes until the steaks are fully cooked and tender.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables and enjoy the rich mushroom onion gravy.
