Teal Fan Lace Table Runner with Tassels

Materials

  • Approximately 600–800 m cotton yarn in teal
  • 3–3.5 mm crochet hook, adjusted to your yarn
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • 14 wooden beads with large holes
  • Cardboard for making tassels

US crochet terms: ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch.

1. Crochet the fan motifs

Make one sample first. Each fan is worked back and forth.

  • Row 1: Ch 4. Work 7 dc into the fourth chain from the hook. The skipped chains count as the first dc. 8 dc total. Turn.
  • Row 2: Ch 3, counting as the first dc. Work 1 dc in the same stitch, then 2 dc in each remaining stitch. 16 dc total. Turn.
  • Row 3: Ch 4, counting as 1 dc and ch 1. Dc in the next stitch, ch 1 across, omitting the final ch 1. 16 dc and 15 chain spaces. Turn.
  • Row 4: Ch 1. Sc in every dc and every ch-1 space. 31 sc. Fasten off, leaving a sewing tail.

Make approximately 36 fans: 12 for each of three lengthwise panels. Add or remove fans to suit your table.

2. Assemble three fan panels

Lay 12 fans in a straight line with all curved edges facing the same direction. Position the narrow starting point of each fan against the middle of the previous fan’s curved edge.

Sew each connection securely over several stitches. Repeat for the other two panels.

3. Make four lengthwise rails

These frame and separate the three fan panels.

Ch until the chain measures the length of one arranged panel without stretching.

  • Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and across.
  • Rows 2–3: Ch 1, turn, sc across.

Make four rails of equal length.

Arrange them as follows:

Rail • Fan panel • Rail • Fan panel • Rail • Fan panel • Rail

4. Connect the lace to the rails

Center each fan panel between two rails.

Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the two outer corners of every fan’s curved edge to the neighboring rails. Keep the placement even and leave the open spaces between fans.

If a fan cannot reach both rails without stretching, move the rails closer together before sewing.

5. Add the end borders

At each short end, crochet a row of sc across the rail ends, using chain bridges between rails to span the lace panels. Make each bridge long enough to lie flat.

Work a second row of sc into every stitch and chain.

For seven tassel loops, mark seven evenly spaced positions, including both corners. Attach yarn at each mark, ch 6, and sl st back into the same stitch. Fasten off.

6. Make the beaded tassels

For each of the 14 tassels:

  • Wrap yarn 35–45 times around a 12 cm piece of cardboard.
  • Tie the bundle tightly at the top, then cut the opposite end.
  • Wrap yarn around the bundle about 2 cm below the top to form the tassel neck.
  • Thread the top tying strands through a wooden bead.
  • Secure the tassel to one border loop and weave in the ends.

7. Finish

Weave in all remaining tails. Gently wet-block the runner, arranging the fans and rails evenly. Let it dry flat, then trim the tassels to a uniform length.

For a closer visual match, use tightly spun cotton and keep the fan panels narrow, with clear open spaces between the motifs.
